Carpentry and Home Improvement

Program Overview

The Carpentry course of study prepares students to lay out, fabricate, erect, install, and repair wooden structures and fixtures using hand and power tools. Students receive instruction in common systems of framing, construction materials, estimating, blueprint reading, concrete placing, siding, and mechanical systems. Program standards are aligned with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) task list.

Students in this program will learn Orientation to the Carpentry Trade, Building Materials, Fasteners and Adhesives, Reading Plans and Elevations, Floor Systems, Wall and Ceiling and Roof Framing, Concrete Reinforcing Materials and Forms, Windows and Exterior Doors, Basic Stair Layout, Roofing Applications Thermal and Moisture Protection, Exterior Finishing, Drywall Installation and Finishing, Doors and Door Hardware, Window, Door, Floor and Ceiling Trim.

Masonry

The Home Improvement-Masonry course of study provides students with instruction in the basic maintenance and repair skills required to service major mechanical appliances including building air conditioning, heating, plumbing, electrical, and other systems. Students are taught how to apply technical knowledge and skills to keep a building functioning and to service a variety of commercial, industrial, and mobile structures. This course assists students in preparation to be building property maintenance technicians and/or managers. 

Students in this program will learn distance measurement and leveling; concrete, reinforcing materials, and forms; masonry; units and installation techniques; floor systems; wall, ceiling, and roof framing; exterior finishing; basic stair layout; electrical safety; residential electrical services; an introduction to heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); drain, waste, and vent systems; plastic pipe and copper pipe fittings.
